We LOVE homemade pizza; we just can’t get enough of it.

Whether we’re tucking into a great mushroom pizza or even a Nutella dessert pizza, we are in our happy place.

But we’ve been craving a Hawaiian pizza, so we developed this sensationally tasting vegetarian version that we know you’re going to love!

  • Kids love it and they can also help prepare the pizza.
  • It’s perfect for a game night, pizza night, or for outdoor cooking!
  • Sweet and savory flavors are just perfect together!

What ingredients do I need?

You’ll need all the ingredients shown in the photograph below.

Ingredients needed; fresh basil, pizza sauce, veggie ham, flour, onion, pizza crust, red and yellow bell peppers, sweet pineapple, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese.

Does pineapple belong on pizza? It’s a resounding YES from all our friends and family who have tried it – go on, give it a go!

What are great side dishes for a veggie Hawaiian pizza?

This pizza is great for tucking into on its own, but we think it’s better if you add to it.

Dunk it in pizza aioli, garlic dip, or sour cream and chives.

Add a side of sweet potato fries or even peri peri fries to spice it up.

Eat it with a fresh green salad with balsamic vinaigrette.

Whatever you choose to eat with your pizza with pineapple, we know you’re going to love it!

Why is pineapple on pizza so controversial?

A lot of people love pizza. And, a lot of people love pineapple.

So, it only makes sense that the two would go together, right?

Pineapple on pizza is one of the most controversial topics in the food world.

Some people love it, while others think it’s a travesty.

Here’s a look at why this topping is so divisive.

For some people, pineapple on pizza is an absolute no-go.

They feel that fruit doesn’t belong on savory dishes like pizza.

Others argue that pineapple actually enhances the flavor of pizza, and that its sweetness balances out the saltiness of the cheese and sauce.

We are firmly in the ‘pineapple belongs on pizza‘ camp – what about you?

Why is a pizza with pineapple called a Hawaiian?

The most popular theory is that the Hawaiian pizza was invented by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant who owned a pizzeria in Canada.

He decided to put pineapple on a pizza as a way to stand out from the competition. And it worked!

The Hawaiian pizza quickly became one of his most popular items.

Panopoulos later said that he didn’t actually intend for the pizza to be named after Hawaii.

He just thought the word “Hawaiian” sounded exotic and would help sell more pizzas.

But the name stuck, and now Hawaiian pizza is known all over the world.

So, there you have it! The next time you’re enjoying a slice of Hawaiian pizza, you can thank Sam Panopoulos for its existence.

What’s the best way to cook a pizza?

We are obsessed with our pizza oven, it truly has transformed our pizzas to another level and now we have a long list of people wanting to visit for a pizza night!

Our Ooni pizza oven is so easy to use and creates that oh so delicious charred crust and can cook a pizza in as little as 60 seconds! I know – right?

But not everyone has space to accommodate a pizza oven, so we suggest the next best thing.

A pizza stone; they’re not expensive, they fit into your kitchen oven and they will cook a great pizza for you!

If you don’t want to have a pizza stone, then we would suggest a pizza pan.

A pizza pan has holes in the bottom and is so much better than using a baking sheet.

The holes allow the heat to get to the pizza crust, and we find that using a baking sheet can often make the pizza soggy.

Should I use store bought pizza dough or homemade pizza dough?

Nothing really beats homemade pizza dough, there’s something so special as you bite into a homemade pizza crust!

But if you’re anything like us, you don’t always have the time or inclination – right?

In that case, it’s perfectly fine to use either store bought pizza dough or pizza crust!

Just buy a brand that you are happy with, they are not all made the same!

Preventing a soggy crust

There’s nothing more disappointing than biting into your veggie Hawaiian pizza and finding that instead of a crispy crust, it’s all soggy.

But what can you do to prevent a soggy pizza base?

There are four ways to prevent this pizza from going soggy.

First, don’t overload the toppings, too many toppings will result in a soggy base.

Second, if using canned pineapple, make sure you pat it dry and there’s no juice seeping onto your pizza dough.

Third, don’t spread your pizza sauce too thick.

Fourth, Preheat your oven, pizza bakes at a really hot heat, so it’s crucial that your oven is hot!

Hawaiian pizza toppings

A traditional meat version of this pizza will include Canadian bacon, ham, and pineapple.

But for this vegetarian version, you can play around with the Hawaiian pizza ingredients!

We used pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, fresh pineapple, vegetarian ham, onion, sweet red and yellow peppers, and fresh basil.

Make it vegan

The only ingredient that you’ll need to replace is the mozzarella cheese, you can easily find vegan cheese in stores these days.

The vegetarian ham is plant based, so it’s vegan too.

How do I store leftover pizza?

Your pizza will store for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the fridge.

Just reheat it when you’re ready to eat it or you can do what we do, eat it cold!

It’ll also freeze for up to 3 months, but if you’ve used frozen pizza dough, we don’t recommend refreezing it.
