If you are using an Ooni pizza oven
Preheat our Ooni pizza oven to 850°F/450°C.
Lightly dust your pizza peel with flour, then place your flatbread dough on the peel.
To make the Margherita flatbread pizza, brush pizza sauce over the top of the bread (homemade pizza sauce is the best), leaving ¼ inch border, then add fresh mozzarella cheese and sliced tomatoes evenly over the sauce.
Place the flatbread pizza in the oven and cook for two to three minutes, turning every 20 seconds with a pizza turning peel to ensure an even cook.
Remove from the oven, scatter with fresh basil leaves and an optional drizzle of olive oil, serve and enjoy!
If you are using a kitchen oven
Preheat our oven to 500°F/260°C, and if you use a pizza stone or pizza steel, place it in the oven to heat up.
Lightly dust your work surface, pizza pan, or baking sheet with flour, then place your flatbread dough on it.
Spread pizza sauce over the flatbread (homemade pizza sauce is the best), leaving ¼ inch border, then add fresh mozzarella cheese and sliced tomatoes evenly over the sauce.
Place the flatbread pizza in the oven and cook for 8 – 10 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure an even cook.
Remove from the oven, scatter with fresh basil leaves and an optional drizzle of olive oil, serve and enjoy your delicious flatbread pizza!
Recipe notes and expert tips
- Make them vegan
The only ingredient you’ll need to sub is mozzarella cheese; use a plant-based alternative. - Sub out flatbread
Use naan bread or pita bread; the taste will slightly differ, but it’ll work just as well. - Important
Pizza ovens, pizza stones, or pans all cook differently. Watch your pizza; you may have to increase or reduce the cooking time.
Recipe variations
Virtually any pizza topping can be used on a flatbread pizza; try pesto pizza, mushroom pizza, or vegan pizza.
You can add vegetarian Parmesan cheese, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and BBQ sauce, or why not add veggie pepperoni?
Use vegetarian versions of pesto sauce, alfredo sauce, or marinara sauce instead of pizza sauce.
You can also sub the flatbread and use naan bread or pita bread.
Choose what suits YOU and what you have in your fridge.
It’s also awesome dipped in garlic aioli or our sriracha mayo recipe.
How to store leftover flatbread pizza
Keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to three days; either reheat leftovers or eat cold.
You can also freeze flatbread pizza for up to three months.
A question we often get asked is, can you reheat pizza in an air fryer? Yes, you can!
How does flatbread differ from pizza dough?
So what’s the difference?
Flatbread and pizza dough are made from flour, water, and salt, but there are some critical differences between the two.
Flatbreads are generally thinner and more flexible, don’t contain yeast like pizza dough, and are typically cooked on a griddle or in a skillet rather than in a pizza oven.
They have a shorter rising time, giving a denser texture and a more rustic flavor.
