How to make sweet potato fritters with step-by-step instructions

Making our sweet potato fritters recipe is easy if you follow our step-by-step instructions.

Place your shredded sweet potatoes, grated ginger, and egg in a large mixing bowl.

Then, add flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt, and mix together to combine.

Over medium heat, heat a frying pan or cast iron skillet for approximately 2 minutes, then coconut and add oil until it is approximately ¼ inch deep.

Using your hands, shape the shredded sweet potato mixture into patties approximately 3 inches wide and ¼ inch deep.

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix until combined.

Fry until lightly golden brown.

Place the sweet potato fritters gently into the pan, ensuring that they don’t touch each other or the sides of the pan, you may have to cook in batches, they should sizzle immediately.

Fry the fritters until they are lightly golden brown on one side, approximately 2 – 3 minutes, and then flip them and cook until lightly golden brown on both sides.

Remove the fritters from the pan and place them on paper towels so excess oil drains from them, and sprinkle kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper over them.

Repeat the process until all the fritters have been cooked, keep the fritters warm by placing them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and putting them in a warm oven.

Serve while hot, and enjoy your sweet potato fritters!

    We’ve used coconut oil as we love the flavor it gives the fritters, but you could use vegetable oil or avocado oil.
  • Storage
    Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and freeze for up to 3 months.

Sweet potato fritters are delicious as a snack and dipped in your favorite dipping sauce.

It doesn’t need to be a difficult sauce, sriracha sauce is a perfectly spicy sauce to counteract the natural sweetness of the sweet potato.

We love to dip them in sour cream and chives, and homemade ranch sauce. and even a nice hot sauce like sriracha sauce aioli or arrabiata sauce.

They make a great side with a veggie burger or vegan burger.

Can you grate sweet potatoes in a food processor?

Yes, you can, just use the grater attachment or grater disc that your food processor comes with.

If you don’t have a food processor, then use a box grater instead.

Why are my sweet potato fritters soggy?

When fritters are soggy, it’s most likely that the oil you used for cooking wasn’t hot enough.

You need to ensure that the oil is very hot; use a little grated sweet potato mixture to test the oil; if it sizzles as you place it in, then it’s ready; if it doesn’t, then keep heating the oil.

Substitute all-purpose flour with almond flour for gluten-free sweet potato fritters.

Can I make them ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the potato mixture, cover it with plastic wrap and leave it in the fridge the day before you cook them.

  • cup All purpose flour
