What’s the best tequila to use for this old-fashioned cocktail?

We recommend using anéjo tequila, the smoothness and the flavor that you have with anéjo is much better than a silver tequila or a reposado tequila.

This is because it’s an aged tequila and made to be sipped rather than mixed.

Yes, it is more expensive than the other blends of tequila, but it’s totally worth it.

Smooth anéjo tequila with citrus hints from the orange bitters, makes this twist on the classic old-fashioned, an instant hit. Settle down in a comfy chair, and take the time to enjoy every sip.

Do I have to use agave syrup?

Agave syrup is used in our tequila old-fashioned because it’s a natural sweetener.

Agave plants are distilled to produce tequila, so it makes sense to use a natural sweetener from the same plant.

Most grocery stores will have agave syrup, but generally, you won’t find it in the drinks aisle, it’s usually around the baking section.

What glass should I use for a tequila old-fashioned?

You may see suggestions of a low-ball glass, an old-fashioned glass, or a rocks glass, but they are all pretty much the same name for a short tumbler and that’s exactly what we’d recommend.

Recipe tips and notes

  • Don’t have a mixing glass?
That’s no problem, just use a large glass or even a measuring jug instead, this will act as a good temporary stand-in.
  • No jigger?
We use a jigger to measure the liquids, if you don’t have one then use a measuring jug or even a shot glass.
