Refreshingly tart, the flavors of tequila with a subtle mix of sweet orange and grapefruit, make this salty chihuahua the perfect cocktail. This Mexican-inspired cocktail is based on the classic salty dog and we think it tastes perfect!

A salty dog is made from vodka, triple sec, and grapefruit juice.

A salty chihuahua replaces the vodka with tequila – simple!

There’s something so irresistible about this refreshing cocktail that makes it great by the poolside, at a party, or sitting and watching the sun go down.

Ingredients needed, grapefruit juice, tequila, fresh lime, & triple sec.

Do I need to make the salt rim for my glass?

Apart from the name, the salt gives the perfect balance with the grapefruit juice.

This perfect cocktail recipe is great for making shots, simply follow our recipe instructions but instead of using an old-fashioned or tumbler glass, use shot glasses instead!

Yes, this is the perfect cocktail to make ahead.

You can make it the day ahead and store it in the fridge to keep it chilled.

Just remember to remove the ice cubes or your cocktail will be diluted.

    That’s not a problem, use a jar with a lid as your shaker and a tea strainer to strain your cocktail into the glass.
  • Like it a little more tart?
    Add a squeeze of lime juice.
  • Got leftover grapefruit?
    Cut it into slices and freeze it, they make perfect grapefruit ice slices in your cocktails!
  • Make it ahead
    Make your cocktail and keep it chilling in the fridge, just remember to remove the ice cubes or it’ll dilute and don’t make your salty rim, or it’ll harden too much.

    Use pink grapefruit to give a lovely pink look to your cocktail.

How to make a salty chihuahua cocktail with step-by-step instructions

Making a salty chihuahua is easy if you follow our simple instructions.

Take your old-fashioned glass and wipe a lime wedge around the rim, then swirl it gently round in coarse salt so the salt sticks to the rim and set aside.

Process shots, photo one; make your salty rim, photo two; add ice to a cocktail shaker, then add grapefruit juice and tequila; photo three, add triple sec, shake and pour.

Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker, then add fresh grapefruit juice, silver tequila, and triple sec or Cointreau.

Secure the lid on your cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for approximately 20 seconds, then strain and fill the glass, garnish with a lime wedge, serve and enjoy – cheers!

Cocktail shaker set
1 Cocktail shaker not essential – see notes
Cocktail jigger
1 Jigger not essential – see notes
1 Cocktail strainer not essential – see notes
1 Old fashioned glass

Ingredients

  • 1 Lime wedge
  • 1 tbsp Coarse salt
  • Ice cubes
  • 5 oz Fresh grapefruit juice
  • 2 oz Silver tequila
  • 1 oz Triple sec
  • 1 Lime wedge to garnish
