What do I serve this crumble recipe with?

We usually serve apple crumble with ice cream, custard, or a generous helping of whipped cream!

What’s the difference between an apple crumble and an apple crisp recipe?

When it comes to apples, there are two classic desserts that come to mind: apple crisp and apple crumble.

Both recipes are similar in that they include a layer of baked apples topped with a crumbly topping, but there are some key differences that set them apart.

For starters, an apple crisp has an oat-based topping. The oats are combined with flour, sugar, and butter and then spread over the top of the apples before baking.

An apple crumble, on the other hand, has a more biscuit-like topping made with flour, sugar, and butter (no oats).

Just like a gluten free apple crumble, you can also make a gluten free apple crisp also.

Gluten free flour and gluten free oats, will give you all of the flavor but none of the gluten.

Is a crumble like a Dutch apple pie?

No, although it does share similarities.

A crumble includes layers of baked apples with a crumble topping.

Whereas a Dutch apple pie has a pie crust on the bottom of the dessert and a streusel topping.

Add flavor

We’ve given you the base recipe for gluten free apple crumble, but it’s easy to add some delicious flavor.

Add lemon juice to the apples for extra zest.

A little cinnamon will give a lovely taste to your apple mixture.

Throw some certified gluten-free oats into the crumble topping to make it more like a gluten-free apple crisp recipe!

How do I store leftover gluten free apple crumble?

Your apple crumble will store for up to 3 days when covered and stored in the fridge.

You can also freeze apple crumble.

If you are batch cooking, we recommend freezing the apple filling separately to the crumble topping, as when you defrost the crumble topping would become soggy.
