How to make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips with step-by-step instructions

A complete printable recipe and the US customary and metric measurements are available in the recipe card below.

Preheat your air fryer to 320°F/160°C.

With a pastry brush, brush both sides of the tortillas with olive oil or spray with cooking spray (avocado oil would also work).

Stack all the tortillas on each other, then cut them into triangles. I like to use a sharp knife for this; however, kitchen scissors or a pizza cutter also work really well.

Place the triangles in the air fryer basket in a single layer and sprinkle with kosher salt. Do not overlap the tortilla triangles, as they won’t cook evenly.

Uncooked tortilla chips in a single layer in an air fryer basket.
Place the tortillas in the air fryer basket. Air fry until golden brown.

Air fry until the tortilla chips are golden brown and crisp, approximately 6 – 8 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure even cooking.

Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them with your favorite dip!

Notes

Cook time: The cooking time can vary between different air fryers. Check the chips at the 3-minute mark when you flip the chips over. If they seem quite crispy already, cook them for another 2-3 minutes. Add extra time as needed. They will be lightly browned on the edges when finished.
Oil: We find that olive oil cooking spray is quick and easy to use for this recipe. If you don’t have olive oil spray, try adding a little oil to a small bowl and brushing it on with a pastry brush.
Seasoning: Add your favorite seasonings! I’ve included a few ideas in the post above, but feel free to get creative.
Storage: Store any leftover tortilla chips in an airtight container like a sealed bag for up to a week. If they start to go soft, crisp them back up in the air fryer by cooking them at 350°F/175°C for 1-2 minutes.

How to store leftover homemade tortilla chips

Store any leftover air fryer chips in an airtight container like a sealed bag at room temperature.

They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days, however, it they begin to go soft or stale, just pop them back into the air fryer for 1-2 minutes to crisp them back up.

What to serve with tortilla chips

Perfect on their own or as a scoop with your favorite dips, there are so many great options when it comes to serving air fryer tortilla chips.

Our favorite dip recipes are Tirokafteri (Spicy Greek Cheese Dip), Garlic Dip, Creamy Avocado Sauce (or guacamole), Spicy Salsa Taquera, and Salsa Roja. They go amazingly well with this easy recipe!

Air Fryer Tortilla Chips make the best nachos! You can even make nachos right in your air fryer.

Just sprinkle the cooked chips with cheese and other toppings like jalapenos and diced tomatoes, and air fry them for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts. Tip them carefully onto a plate and enjoy.

Why not try adding the chips to a bowl to make a tortilla bowl? It’s kind of like a crunchy burrito bowl. Top it with your favorite toppings, refried beans, cilantro-lime rice, and some grated cheese.

This is an excellent side dish for your Mexican favorites! Our Birria Tacos are so easy to make, our vegetarian burritos are always on the food rota, and chips on top of chili are a match made in heaven!

Other seasonings to try

Variety is the spice of life and these flavor variations are great for any occasion!

Sweet: Sprinkle the tortilla chips with cinnamon sugar before cooking for a warm, sweet option. They taste like super crispy churros! We like to lightly spray a butter-flavored cooking spray to make the chips that bit more delicious. Serve it with ice cream and a drizzle of maple syrup for an easy dessert.

Chili-lime: Lightly sprinkle chili powder over the tortilla chips along with salt before cooking. A squeeze of fresh lime juice at the end, and these crispy chips are ready!

Cajun: Sprinkle cajun seasoning over the tortilla wedges before air frying. Check if there is salt already in the cajun seasoning before adding salt.

Cool ranch: Sprinkle ranch seasoning over the tortilla chips immediately after cooking. The light coating of oil will help the seasoning stick to the chips while they’re still hot.

Garlic-herb: Mix together 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of Italian herbs seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Sprinkle this mixture over the cooked chips while they’re still hot, and toss them gently to coat evenly. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end will make these flavors pop!

Which tortillas work with this recipe?

Although we prefer corn, you can use any kind of soft tortillas for this recipe. Here’s a quick look into each type:

  • Corn tortillas: Classic corn tortilla chips (like Doritos) are made with yellow corn tortillas. Other colors of tortillas like blue corn or white corn tortillas are delicious as well, and sometimes we use all three colors for a bit of variety.
  • Flour tortillas: Soft flour tortillas have a different flavor but also make the crispiest tortilla chips! They are so delicious. They can be made with regular or gluten-free tortillas if needed.
  • Low-carb tortillas: Yes, this air fryer tortilla chips recipe even works with keto tortillas! Just follow the recipe as it is for a tasty low-carb treat.
  • Larger tortillas: If you’re using large tortillas, cut them into smaller tortilla pieces so they are a similar size to normal chips.
