Ingredients to make watermelon margaritas, tequila, triple sec, sugar syrup, watermelon, lime juice and salt with lime zest

What makes a margarita a margarita?

A classic margarita is made from three ingredients, orange liqueur, lime juice, tequila and it usually has a salted rim on the glass.

It’s served three different ways, either straight up (no ice), on the rocks (with ice) or frozen (blended with ice).

What alcohol goes in it?

In our super summer watermelon margarita, we use two alcoholic ingredients, tequila and triple sec.

Will I need a cocktail shaker?

Yes, you’ll need a cocktail shaker to shake and incorporate and blend all of the ingredients together.

Check out our tips section if you don’t have a shaker.

Do I use fresh watermelon?

The main star of the show here in your watermelon margarita is the watermelon, so why would you risk anything less than fresh?

We’ve used a fresh watermelon, in our opinion you just can’t beat the delicious fresh taste of watermelon that you’ve cut and juiced yourself.

You can use store bought watermelon juice but it won’t have the same refreshing flavour as fresh has.

It doesn’t take long to cut and blitz a watermelon ready to use in your watermelon margarita, we think it’s totally worth the effort.

How do I make fresh watermelon juice?

Making watermelon juice is ridiculously quick and easy.

All you need to do is to cut your watermelon into quarters and then scoop out the flesh straight into your blender.

Blitz the watermelon until you have a smooth juice, and that’s it!

And if you want to make a non alcoholic watermelon drink, try watermelon water.

Is it vegan?

We’re pleased to say that our watermelon margarita recipe is 100% vegan.

However, we always recommend double checking the labels on all of your shop bought ingredients as they do vary and recipes change.

Margarita vs frozen margarita

There are a number of different watermelon margaritas.

Our watermelon margarita recipe is not frozen or on the rocks, we serve it straight up.

A frozen watermelon margarita is made by putting all of the ingredients and ice cubes in a blender.

You blitz them until you have a smooth icy slush, when poured into your glass, you have a frozen margarita.

With our watermelon margarita, we pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes.

We shake the mixture and then strain it into your margarita glass, the cocktail is cooled down from being shaken with the ice cubes.

We don’t put ice cubes in our glass, so it’s not a margarita on the rocks.

If you like in an incredibly hot climate then you may want to use ice cubes in your glass.

Fresh lime juice vs store bought?

We always say the same thing, fresh is best.

Hands down, no competition. You can’t beat the flavour of fresh lime juice.

Store bought bottled lime juice just can’t compete, it will have been made for a while and have preservatives in it.

You can cut and squeeze your juice into your cocktails immediately, it doesn’t get any better than this and let’s face it, you can squeeze your lime in less than a minute.

So in this watermelon margarita recipe then use fresh lime juice.

What’s the best glass for this cocktail?

We always use margarita glasses for our different margaritas.

There are so many different fun margarita glasses that you can use like cactus glasses.

You can also use an old fashioned glass, especially if you like your margarita cocktails on the rocks.

What do I rim the glass with?

For us a margarita isn’t a margarita unless it has an amazing salt rim.

You could just have a salted rim and leave it at that, but for our watermelon margarita version, we like to add a little zest, an extra flavour dimension.

We add the zest of a fresh lime and incorporate it into the salt.

It’s optional but it tastes great!

Do I have to rim the glass for a margarita?

You don’t have to rim your margarita glass but it is better if you do.

If you’re a little uncertain about the salty rim, then try coating just half of the glass with salt.

This way you and your guests can see the difference it makes to the overall flavour of the cocktail.

Can I make this ahead?

Yes, the beauty of our watermelon margarita recipe is that it can be made in advance.

If you are entertaining a crowd and want to be mingling rather than stuck in the kitchen making drinks all night, then this is ideal.

Simply multiply the servings in our recipe card to get the correct ingredient quantities and mix it all up and store covered chilling in your fridge.

When your watermelon margaritas are needed, then simply give the mixture a good stir and pour it into your glasses.
