What beans are best for making baked beans?
Heinz baked beans are made with navy beans or haricot beans.
We use two types of beans cannellini beans and kidney beans to make mixed baked beans.
Pinto beans also make good baked beans.

We know how busy life be and sometimes you just don’t have time to soak and cook your beans for hours.
We’ve given you a pass and cut you some slack, as our recipe uses canned beans.
Still as delicious but so much quicker for busy weeknight dinners.
How to make BBQ beans and mushrooms with step-by-step instructions
Making our tasty baked beans recipe is easy if you follow our instructions.
Making the mushrooms to accompany our homemade baked beans is optional, but we think they finish the dish perfectly.
In a large frying pan over medium heat, add your olive oil, then add your mushrooms and season with sea salt.
Fry the mushrooms for approximately 8 – 10 minutes until they are dark brown but not burnt.
Now add your BBQ sauce, stir to coat the mushrooms evenly, and cook until the mushrooms are very dark and caramelized, but not burnt.
Turn the heat very low, so you’re not cooking them but keeping them warm.
While the mushrooms are cooking, start making the baked beans.
Over medium heat, add olive oil to a large saucepan or Dutch oven, then add your onions and sauté for 5 minutes, until the onions have softened.
Next, add your garlic and sauté for 3 minutes.
Now, add tomato paste, smoked paprika, chili powder, dried thyme, brown sugar, light soy sauce, stir thoroughly to combine, ensure that the onions are evenly coated, and cook for 2 minutes.
Drain and rinse the kidney beans and the cannellini beans and add to the saucepan or Dutch oven, stir to combine, and cook for 2 minutes.

Now add the tomato sauce (passata), stir, and simmer for a further 6 minutes, stirring frequently.
Taste and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Stir in half of the mushrooms, serve, and place the remainder of the mushrooms on top of the baked beans.
Are BBQ beans vegetarian?
Ours are.
Not only that, but they are also vegan too.
Many homemade BBQ beans recipes will use meat, such as bacon, we don’t.
None of the meat but all the delicious BBQ taste!

- Sea salt to season
- 6 tablespoons Barbecue sauce
For the BBQ beans
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 4 cloves of garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste (puree)
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
- 2¼ cups kidney beans
- 2¼ cups Cannellini beans
- 1⅔ cups tomato sauce (passata)
- Salt and pepper to taste
