What is limoncello?
Limoncello is a wonderful Italian lemon liqueur that mainly gets produced in the south of Italy.
Limoncello is made with lemon zest, it’s an intense flavor that’s tart but the tartness is evened up with the addition of simple syrup.
Italians will drink it chilled and they will sip on it neat.
We’ve used limoncello as an excellent base for our lemon drop martini, but it’s also used in other cocktail drinks.
In our limoncello cocktails, it really does give an amazing lemon drop flavor.
What glass should I serve it in?
The obvious glass choice for serving your limoncello martini in is a martini glass, elegant and stylish, this is a great choice.
If you don’t have any martini glasses then don’t worry, you can use a coupe glass or any glass you feel will suit that you have in your cupboard.
How do I make the lemon sugar for a martini?
It’s very simple to make. Simply use sugar and the zest of a lemon.
Zest the lemon straight into the sugar and then rub the zest into the sugar until it’s absorbed, the sugar should turn a lovely yellow color and it’ll smell nice and zesty.
How do you make the sugar stick to the rim of your glass?
A sugared rim looks amazing on our limoncello martini, it really does finish the cocktail off – like the icing on the cake.
The good news is that it’s really easy to do!
A lot of people ask how to make the sugar stick to the rim of the glass, and the secret to this is by using a wedge of lemon.
By gently rubbing the moist lemon wedge around the rim of the glass, you give the sugar something to stick to.
Lemon drop martini vs shot
We’ll let you into a secret, the limoncello lemon drop martini is made with exactly the same ingredients as the lemon drop shot.
They are the same, you just drink them in different glasses.
What’s in a limoncello martini?
This perfect limoncello martini recipe has just four ingredients; limoncello, vodka, simple syrup (sugar syrup) and fresh lemon juice.
Can I make it ahead?
It’s the perfect party cocktail!
If you’re making a limoncello martini for a lot of people for a party, then you’ll probably want to make them ahead so that you’re not stuck in the kitchen all night.
That’s fine, this lemon drop recipe is perfect for making ahead.
Our limoncello martini recipe is for one drink, so all you have to do is simply put in how many drinks you’d like to make into our recipe box below and it’ll instantly calculate the ingredients.
You can then mix the drink and put it in the fridge ready for your guests to enjoy.
You can also make the lemon sugar ahead of time, just put it in an airtight container or a ziplock bag and keep it in the fridge, just be aware that the flavor lessens the longer it’s kept for.
Do I need fresh lemons?
Yes you do. You need fresh lemons in this limoncello lemon drop martini in three parts of the recipe.
You’ll need them for freshly squeezed lemon juice – bottled just doesn’t cut it when the cocktail is all about lemons! It definitely needs to be fresh lemon juice.
You’ll also need fresh lemon slices or lemon peel to use as garnish, and if you’re making your own lemon sugared rim, you’ll need lemon zest.
Should I garnish with lemon or an olive?
We’ve used lemon to garnish our limoncello martini cocktail, we just feel that this is the best possible garnish as it’s an extra layer of zest.
Olives are typically used to garnish a traditional martini but don’t really suit a limoncello martini.
We used a slice and floated it on the top of the drink but you could make a lemon twist out of lemon peels.
What’s the best vodka to use?
For our vodka martini recipe, we recommend using a brand you love to drink.
A good quality bottle of vodka is important but don’t break the bank, it’s more important to use a vodka that you know you like.
We used Smirnoff vodka for our vodka martini as we like it but vodka brands are personal preference in this vodka limoncello cocktail.
