Refreshing and perfect for breakfast or a light summer dessert
We love nothing better than a healthy fresh fruit salad to start our day.
To be honest, to us it’s more of a breakfast dish, but you can also have it as a light summer dessert after a filling meal.
Ideal fruits to use for a fresh fruit salad
The ideal fruits to use are simply the ones that you like!
In our salad recipe, we used pear, apple, mango, kiwi, banana, satsuma, and grapes. They were delicious.
Forget 5 a day – this is 7 a day!
Other fruits that are lovely when included are strawberries, melon, pineapple, raspberries, cherries, plums, and watermelon – the possibilities are endless.
All of these would make for a fantastically, healthy and tasty fruit salad.
You could also try mixing in some seeds and nuts to give it an additional dimension.
How do you keep fruit salad from turning brown?
This can be a problem if you are preparing in advance.
You can minimize the risk of this by coating the fruit with orange, lemon, or pineapple juice.
This will slow down the browning process.
Fresh fruit or canned?
Fresh is always so much better than any tinned version.
You just can’t replace the freshness and taste that fresh fruits have.
It’s not always possible though, you may be short of time or just can’t get to the shops and so if a canned version is a good alternative.
Does fruit salad keep overnight?
Yes, it can be kept overnight and we often store it overnight.
The best way to keep it fresh is to pour citrus juice over your fruit salad then store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
What do I serve it with?
It’s a very flexible dish and can be served just on its own.
Or you can serve it with ice cream, sorbet, Greek yogurt, or cream or if you’re watching your calories, then fromage frais or zero fat natural yogurt works really well too!
Whatever your occasion all of these work perfectly well with a healthy fresh fruit salad.
How to make your very own homemade healthy fruit salad
We urge you to experiment with your own combinations, you can’t really go wrong, but if you like the look of ours, then this is the recipe and is how we made it.
