How to Make Snowman Cookies with Step-By-Step Instructions

Dough Preparation

Begin by creaming together unsalted butter and sugar in a large bowl until the mixture becomes soft and well combined.

Then, stir in eggs and vanilla extract, mixing thoroughly.

Making the Cookie Dough

Gradually add all-purpose flour, gently folding it into the mixture to avoid lumps. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours.

Shaping the Sugar Cookies

Remove the dough from the fridge and divide it into two halves. Roll each half to about ¼ inch thickness. For the snowman shapes, cut 10 big circles with a small star cut-out in the middle.

If you don’t have a cookie cutter like this, use a big cookie cutter and then a small one for the inner circle.

Next, cut out 10 big circles with a small circle on top. You can either use a snowman cookie cutter or a large circle and a small circle and attach them with a bit of water.

Baking

Preheat oven to 180ºC (356ºF). Arrange cookies on a lined baking sheet and bake them for 8-10 minutes until they’re just lightly browned. Add a few extra minutes if needed.

You can line your cookie sheet with either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Allow them to cool completely on a cooling rack before decorating.

Decorating

Split the sugar into two portions. Mix one with water to create a runny white glaze and the other with red food coloring. Add extra water if needed. Then, dip each completely cooled snowman shape into the white glaze, sprinkle with coconut flakes for texture, and add red to the belly.

Make holes for the eyes and nose and paint the face.

Next, dip the cookie with the hole in the middle into the white glaze, sprinkle some coconut on top for a snowy effect, and then place it on top of the larger cookie. This way, the vibrant red color on the cookie below peeks through, adding a fun pop of color!

For the face, use a pointy tool to make holes for the eyes and nose, and then decorate with black edible marker and red icing for the nose.

Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cup all-purpose flour

For the Decoration

  • ½ cup confectioner’s sugar
  • 3 tablespoon water
  • red food colorant
  • ¼ cup coconut flakes
  • black food coloring pencil or black food coloring

Instructions

  • In a big bowl, cream butter and sugar until soft and well incorporated. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well.

  • Then, add flour and slowly incorporate with a spoon. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

  • Use a cookie cutter to cut the shapes – we used a cookie cutter that has a shape in the middle, if you don’t have one like this, you can use a big cookie cutter and then a small one for the inner circle.
  • You will need to create 10 big circles with a small cut-out in the middle and 10 big circles with a small circle on top (you can stick them together with a bit of water) to make the shape of the snowman.
  • Preheat the oven to 180ºC and bake them for 8-10 minutes.
  • Divide the sugar in two and mix one with water until runny and the other with red food coloring; you may add a bit more water if needed, depending on your sugar.
