How to Make Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie with Step-by-Step Instructions

A complete printable recipe and the measurements in both US customary and metric are available in the recipe card below.

Preparing Your Apples and Pie Dish

First things first, let’s get those apples and your pie pan ready! Choose your favorite baking apples – Gala or Royal apples are a fantastic choice for their sweet and slightly tart flavor.

Slice your apples evenly, either with or without the skin.

Toss the apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Slice them up, keeping the skin on for that extra bit of texture and flavor, and toss them in a large bowl with brown sugar, cinnamon powder, a dash of nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.

Meanwhile, preheat your oven to a cozy 350ºF/180ºC and line a 9-inch baking sheet or pie plate with parchment paper to ensure a non-stick baking experience.

Making the Perfect Pie Base

Next, let’s talk crust. For this apple pie cinnamon roll recipe, we’re using a puff pastry sheet as the pie dough base. Lay it gently in your prepared pie dish and blind-bake it for about 10 minutes.

Place the pastry in a pie dish and place baking beans on top.

Blind bake for approximately 10 minutes.

To do this, cover the pastry with another piece of parchment paper and fill it with baking beans or another type of weight to prevent the pastry from puffing up too much.

Assembling the Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie

Now, cut your cinnamon roll dough cylinder into ½ inch slices. Once your puff pastry base has cooled a bit, spread your spiced apple slices evenly over it.

Place the cinnamon rolls evenly on top of the apple pie filling and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Then, place the cinnamon roll sl ices over the apples, arranging them snugly next to each other to create a stunning, spiralized top crust.

Baking to Golden Brown Perfection

Pop your assembled pie into your preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. You’re looking for that beautiful golden brown color on your cinnamon rolls and a bubbling, hot apple filling underneath.

The scent wafting through your kitchen will be almost as rewarding as the pie itself – almost!

Let the pie cool slightly, and then drizzle the glaze evenly over the top.

Glazing for an Extra Touch of Sweetness

While your pie is baking, let’s whip up that glaze! Simply combine powdered sugar, water, and a sprinkle of cinnamon in a bowl.

Once your pie is out of the oven and has cooled slightly, drizzle this sweet concoction over the cinnamon roll top.

Recipe Notes and Expert Tips

  • Apples: When it comes to creating a mouthwatering apple pie, the type of apples you choose can make a significant difference. For a balance of sweet and tart, Gala or Royal apples are a splendid choice. However, if you prefer a pie that’s more on the sweet or tart side, feel free to explore with different apple varieties. Granny Smith apples will give a more tart flavor, while Honeycrisp apples will add extra sweetness.
  • What other fruits can I use in place of apples? Pears would be a delightful alternative to apples in this recipe. They have a similar texture and sweetness and pair wonderfully with cinnamon. You might also try a mix of apples and cranberries for a tart, festive twist.
  • Perfect Cinnamon Roll Crust: When arranging your cinnamon roll slices on top of the apple filling, place them as close together as possible. As they bake, they will expand and fill in any gaps, creating a stunning, continuous cinnamon roll pie crust. Also, keep an eye on the pie during the last few minutes of baking. If the cinnamon rolls are browning too quickly, you can loosely cover them with a piece of aluminum foil.
  • Can I use homemade cinnamon rolls instead of store-bought? Absolutely! If you have a favorite cinnamon roll recipe, feel free to use it in place of the store-bought variety. Just ensure they are baked enough to hold up when placed on top of the apple filling.
  • Glaze: For a thicker glaze, simply reduce the amount of water slightly. If you’re a fan of citrus, a splash of lemon juice in place of water can add a lovely zing to your glaze, complementing the sweet apples beautifully. Drizzle the glaze while the pie is still warm to allow it to seep into the delicious cinnamon rolls, enhancing their flavor and texture.
  • Can I prepare the pie in advance and bake it later? Yes, you can prepare the pie ahead of time! Assemble the pie as directed, then cover it tightly and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if it’s going straight from the fridge to the oven.

How to Store Leftover Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie

It’s not often that you get leftover pie, but here’s how you store it if you do.

Keeping It Fresh in the Fridge

Place your pie in the refrigerator within two hours of baking to maintain its freshness.

Use a pie keeper or an airtight container to keep it moist and protect it from absorbing other flavors in the fridge. Your leftover pie will stay delicious for up to 4-5 days when stored in the refrigerator.

Freezing for Longer Storage

To freeze, allow the pie to cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Place the wrapped pie in a large resealable plastic bag or an airtight container and store it in the freezer.

Properly stored, your pie will maintain its best quality for about 2-3 months.

Reheating to Perfection

If reheating from the refrigerator, simply place a slice in the microwave for a quick treat, or warm it in a preheated 175ºC (350ºF) oven for about 10-15 minutes.

For frozen pie, it’s best to let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in the oven. This will help maintain the pie’s texture and prevent it from becoming soggy.

What to Serve with Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie

You can take your cinnamon roll apple pie to the next level with these serving suggestions.

A Scoop of Classic Vanilla Ice Cream

There’s something undeniably classic and utterly delightful about pairing a warm slice of traditional apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The creamy, cool ice cream contrasts beautifully with the warm, spiced apples and sweet cinnamon roll crust, creating a burst of flavors and textures in every bite.

A Dollop of Whipped Cream

If you’re looking for a lighter accompaniment, a dollop of freshly whipped cream can be a heavenly match.

For a fun twist, consider using a flavored whipped cream, like bourbon or maple, to add an extra layer of complexity to your dessert.

A Pour of Caramel Sauce

For those with a serious sweet tooth, a generous pour of caramel sauce over your slice of pie can be absolutely divine.

The rich, buttery caramel melds with the spiced apples and sweet cinnamon rolls, making a decadent treat that’s sure to satisfy.

A Mug of Hot Coffee or Tea

Sometimes, the best pairing is a simple one. A mug of hot coffee or tea alongside your cinnamon roll apple pie can be a cozy, comforting choice.

The bitterness of dark coffee or the warmth of tea, like chai or apple cinnamon, creates a balanced, satisfying dessert experience.

And if you’re anything like me and love all things apple, why not try this delicious puff pastry apple galette recipe?
