What is a daiquiri?
From the family of rum cocktails, the classic daiquiri is made from 3 ingredients:
- White rum
- Fresh lime juice
- Sugar syrup
In our twist on the classic, we also include Passoa which is a passion fruit liqueur.
Where does a daiquiri cocktail come from?
It’s widely believed that it was an American engineer, called Jennings Cox, who was working in Cuba after the Spanish-American war who invented the daiquiri.
It was probably an accidental invention as they say the reason for the invention was that he ran out of gin while he was hosting a cocktail party, so he used rum instead in his punch and hence the daiquiri was born.
Is it vegan?
Yes, our passion fruit daiquiri is 100% vegan and plant based so you can serve this summer cocktail with complete confidence.
What glass do I serve it in?
We’ve served our passion fruit daiquiri in a tall martini cocktail glass, but you could serve it in a coupe glass or margarita glass also.
Do I need any special equipment?
You’ll need the following equipment to make our passion fruit daiquiri:
- Jigger
- Cocktail shaker

Will I need a blender to make this cocktail?
No, for our passion fruit daiquiri you won’t need a blender.
Is this a frozen daiquiri?
No, this passion fruit daiquiri is a twist on the classic daiquiri which isn’t frozen.
How to tell if a passion fruit is ripe
When you are making our passion fruit daiquiri, it’s pretty crucial that you pick the right passion fruit, you need a good ripe fruit.
When a passion fruit is ripe, they are quite plump, and their skin is wrinkled and a real purple colour – they are the ripe sweet passion fruits that you want.
If the passion fruit that you are looking at in the store has smooth skin, then don’t buy it.
Should I use fresh lime juice or bottled?
Our mantra is fresh is best.
You just can’t get that fresh taste from store bought bottled lime juice that’s packed with preservatives.
Limes are really easy to squeeze, so it’s well worth the extra step.
What rum should I use?
You need to use white rum for our passion fruit daiquiri.
Don’t break the bank buying an expensive rum though buy something that’s mid-range because although you’ll have the strong flavour of passion fruit, you will notice the rum too, so it needs to be good.
Daiquiri vs margarita
A classic daiquiri is made with white rum, fresh lime juice and sugar whereas a margarita is made with tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice and the glass usually has a salted rim.
Both drinks are on the List of IBA official cocktails (International Bartenders Association).
Make your own sugar syrup
If you’re out of sugar syrup for your passion fruit daiquiri, then don’t worry, the good thing is that sugar syrup is very easy to make.
It’s very cost effective to make too, so worth making the effort.
Just put 300ml of caster sugar and 150ml in a pan and on low heat gently dissolve the sugar and once it’s all dissolved, let it cool.
Once cool take a sterilised bottle and pour your homemade sugar syrup in. Store in the fridge.
Can I make it ahead?
Yes, you can mix this up ahead of serving, combine all of the ingredients and then leave the passion fruit daiquiri mixture in the fridge to keep it chilled.
When you’re ready to serve it, just give it a good stir before pouring into your glass.
