Sweet mashed potato

We love creamy sweet mashed potato, there’s something so comforting about a big bowl of freshly made mash. Whenever we have family and friends for Sunday lunch, the bowl of our best mashed sweet potatoes is always the first to go, people go crazy for it! We’ve learned over the years to double up on it because it will always get eaten!

Ingredients for making mashed sweet potatoes at home, chives, kosher salt and pepper, butter, sweet potatoes and milk.

Do you need any special equipment to make mashed sweet potatoes?

No, you don’t.

When you boil sweet potatoes, they become extremely soft, so you can easily mash them with a hand masher, there’s no need for a food processor with this recipe – and less washing up!

How do you store it?

The great thing about mashed sweet potatoes is that they store well, simply cover them and keep them in the fridge for up to 3 days.

This makes them the perfect ‘get ahead’ side dish for family meals.

You can also freeze mashed sweet potatoes, which makes them great for batch cooking.

Cook them as per the recipe instructions and then let them cool completely before transferring them into freezer bags.

They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Make it vegan

It’s the milk and butter that needs substituting to ensure it’s suitable for vegans.

Simply use vegan butter and plant-based milk and everyone will be able to enjoy your mash sweet potatoes.

How do you keep sweet potato mash from getting soggy?

Make sure that you completely drain your cooked sweet potatoes and when you return them to the pot, make sure the pot doesn’t have any water left in it.

Add your melted butter and milk slowly, mashing frequently until you get the consistency that is perfect for you.

There are many different ways to cook them, some people prefer mashed sweet potatoes very sweet and add brown sugar, marshmallows, or maple syrup.

Others like it savoury and add parmesan cheese, sour cream, garlic, or chipotle peppers.

    Add your milk and butter slowly, add a little, mash a little, to get the consistency you prefer.

    Try adding a little cornflour (corn startch), a tablespoon at a time, stir to incorporate and repeat until you get the consistency you’d like.

How to make sweet mashed potatoes with step-by-step instructions

Making our sweet potato mash recipe is easy if you follow our simple instructions.

Over high heat bring a large saucepan, or Dutch oven, of water to boil.

Peel your sweet potatoes and dice them into chunks.

Add your diced sweet potatoes to the pot, making sure that the water covers them, and cook them until tender and you can pierce them easily with a sharp knife, approximately 20-25 minutes.
