Recipe notes and expert tips

  • Spinach
Make sure that you squeeze out all the excess water from the spinach or your pizza will become soggy.
  • Out of fresh garlic?
    Use garlic powder instead.
  • Storage
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Important
Different pizza ovens, pizza stones, or pans all cook differently. Watch your pizza, as you may have to increase or reduce the cooking time.

Your spinach pizza will store for up to 3 days when kept in the fridge in an airtight container.

It’ll also freeze for up to 3 months.

What’s the best way to cook a pizza?

For a great pizza, you need to have a great pizza crust, one that’s perfectly cooked with just enough crispiness.

There are three ways that you can achieve a crispy crust.

  • Pizza oven: A pizza oven can achieve higher temperatures than your kitchen oven, they have pizza stones that heat up and allows you to cook your pizza in a matter of just a few minutes. You know those crispy charred pizza crusts that you get from good pizza restaurants? They are all made in a pizza oven, and it’s our number one recommendation for the best pizzas; we have to warn you, though, if you get one, it will be quite addictive!
  • Pizza stone: A pizza stone will fit in your kitchen oven, the stone will heat up, and you place your pizza directly onto the stone. This means that your crust will cook evenly, and you’ll get a good level of crispiness.
  • Pizza pan: A pizza pan has holes in it, this allows the heat to reach parts of your pizza crust. You won’t get the same level of crispiness as you will from a pizza oven or pizza stone, but it’ll be better than if you used a baking sheet.

In an ideal world, we’d all have a pizza oven, but that’s not always possible; we’d opt for the pizza stone, it’s low cost, and you’ll see some great results.

Do I cook spinach before putting it on pizza?

Yes, you will need to cook the spinach for this recipe.

Simply blanch really quickly, or alternatively, you can use frozen spinach.

Fresh spinach or frozen spinach?

We’ve used frozen baby spinach in our recipe; the thing you need to make sure you do with either fresh or frozen spinach is to squeeze it so that it doesn’t have any water in it.

If you don’t squeeze it enough, you’ll end up with a soggy bottom, and nobody wants that do they?

If you’re using fresh spinach, simply blanch it and squeeze out all the water; sauteed spinach will also work.

Can you put uncooked spinach on pizza?

Yes, you can use uncooked spinach, but we don’t like it for this recipe as it doesn’t give the same results.

If you were to use fresh spinach, then make sure to place it under the cheese.

Best way to cut a pizza

You want those perfect pizza slices, don’t you? And a kitchen knife just doesn’t cut it (see what we did there?)

A pizza cutter makes it easy to slice; slice up the pizza, and your guests can help themselves.

This is the best pizza cutter we’ve tried; it’s not flimsy and is really sharp.

You could also try these pizza scissors; they do a pretty decent job too.

Recipe variations

Spinach pizza is often called a white pizza with spinach white because of the cheese.

You can use goat cheese or feta cheese instead of mozzarella, or use them both.

We used shredded mozzarella, but you could use fresh mozzarella.

Experiment with the pizza toppings; add a little spice and add crushed red pepper flakes to the ricotta mixture.

Use fresh herbs; we’ve already used oregano, but add rosemary and thyme, or use our Italian herbs.

Throw some kalamata olives, bell peppers, or mushrooms.

Scatter fresh basil on your pizza once it’s cooked, and drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil over the top.

Just make sure you don’t add too many toppings to your pizza; less is more, and the more you have, the more you run the chance of ending up with a soggy bottom.

Let’s talk pizza dough

There’s nothing like homemade pizza dough, the flavor, texture, and love that goes into it shine through.

But not everyone has the time or inclination to make their own pizza dough, I know that after a long day, the last thing we want to do is to start making dough.

You can pick up some great store-bought pizza dough these days, and you can also buy some great-tasting pizza crusts.
